Longhorn Hall D (Gaylord Grapevine)
Robin Lynn Driver, RN, C-EFM, BS , Perinatal, Mount Carmel Health System, Columbus, OH

Discipline: Obstetric (OB), Professional Issues (PI)

Learning Objectives:
  • Identify the rationale/background for the Labor Oxytocin Induction Study
  • Examine the effects of a standardized low dose oxytocin protocol on maternal and neonatal outcomes
  • Develop a quality assurance plan to ensure compliance with the standardized low dose oxytocin protocol

  • Submission Description:
Oxytocin has been the subject of many patient safety initiatives since the Institute of Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) added it to their list of High Alert Medications in 2007. Our hospital system implemented a standardized low dose oxytocin protocol with nursing checklists and decision trees for the management of tachysystole. This study examines the effects of a standardized low dose oxytocin protocol on maternal and neonatal outcomes.
