Longhorn Hall D (Gaylord Grapevine)
Kensi Layne Cottingham, BSN, RN , Labor And Delivery, UAB Hospital, Birmingham, AL
Milea Eyer, MSN, RNC-OB , UAB Hospital, Birmingham, AL

Discipline: Obstetric (OB)

Learning Objectives:
  • Identify the need for a new process to decrease surgical site infections
  • Understand the methods used for standardizing surgical preparation before a Cesarean Section
  • Be able to recall the education provided to staff and the system developed to maintain competance among RN's

  • Submission Description:
Reimbursement denial for wound infections postoperatively is a quality metric that can impact institutions financially. The purpose of this presentation is to describe the efforts and outcomes of standardizing the process of surgical preparation for Cesarean Sections and methods used to educate nursing staff of the practice. By systematizing these changes, we successfully decreased our SSI rate and empowered nurses with a new confidence in the operating room.
