Title: A6B - Get Her Delivered: Using a Team Approach to Bring Evidenced-Based Care to the Bedside and Improve Outcomes in a Labor and Delivery Unit

Texas C (Gaylord Grapevine)
Paris A. Maloof-Bury, BSN, RNC-OB, IBCLC, ICCE , Labor and Delivery, Community Memorial Hospital, Ventura, CA
Sally F. McNally, ADN, RNC-OB, C-EFM, CLC, ICCE, CPFE, CBD, CYI , Labor and Delivery, Community Memorial Hospital, Ventura, CA

Discipline: Obstetric (OB), Neonatal (N), Professional Issues (PI), Women’s Health (WH)

Learning Objectives:
  • Describe what the literature says about labor support and the role of the registered nurse.
  • Describe non-pharmacological techniques to promote both coping and labor progress.
  • Describe new ways for the nurse to provide prenatal and intrapartum education, and to support physiologic birth.

  • Submission Description:
In an era of high-tech, high-cost care, and some of the poorest outcomes in the developed world, a small group labor and delivery nurses formed a team and made some big changes. Using education and policy, these nurses brought evidence-based practice to the bedside, not only improving outcomes, but creating a culture where labor support, patient education, vaginal birth, and women are truly valued.
