Jay Michelle Bland, MSN, RN, NEA-BC , Women and Infant Department, Ben Taub Hospital- Harris Health System, Houston, TX
Loretha M. Darden, BSN, RN , Women and Infant Department, Ben Taub Hospital- Harris Health System, Houston, TX

Discipline: Obstetric (OB)

Learning Objectives:
  • The learner will be able to define an infant fall and identify common factors found in newborn falls
  • The learner will be able to identify the difference between room-sharing and bed-sharing
  • The learner will be able to identify the required measures of our Safe Sleep Campaign

  • Submission Description:
Rooming- in and skin to skin for mother and baby is a well-established best practice; however, recent literature suggests this model of care poses a risk for infant falls. While promoting skin to skin is important, staff are challenged to maintain infant safety and ensure safe sleep practices are followed. A comprehensive safe sleep program was created that focused on infant safe sleep practices both inpatient and at home.
