  • Describe Neonatal Opiate Withdrawal (NOW) Syndrome and NOW scoring.
  • Discuss importance of universal maternal urine drug testing.
  • Identify current neonatal treatment options for Neonatal Opiate Withdrawal.

  • Submission Description:
    In order to provide better care for infants experiencing opiate and other illegal substance withdrawal, a multi-disciplinary task force was created to design and implement a Neonatal Opiate Withdrawal treatment program. This program includes regional hospital sponsored universal maternal urine drug testing upon labor admission, nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic neonatal treatment, and mandatory Neonatal Opiate Withdrawal training for all nursing staff.Better neonatal outcomes will occur through standardized nursing training, infant assessment and treatment.
