Title: My Pregnant Patient is Coding! What Do I Do? Special Considerations for the Obstetric Patient

Longhorn Hall D (Gaylord Grapevine)
Christine Renfro, BSN, RNC-OB, C-EFM , Women & Children's Services, Labor and Delivery, Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, TX
Shawna Robertson, BSN, RNC-OB, C-EFM , Labor and Delivery, Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, TX

Discipline: Obstetric (OB), Neonatal (N), Professional Issues (PI)

Learning Objectives:
  • 1. Develop tools to facilitate appropriate interventions and role assignment during obstetrical codes.
  • 2. Discover a unique approach to address knowledge deficits regarding interventions during an obstetrical code.
  • 3. Integrate a realistic case scenario into simulation training to maximize the learning experience.

  • Submission Description:
Obstetric cardiac arrest (OCA) is a rare occasion that increases anxiety in responding teams. Due to the uniqueness of this population, these events can be challenging to effectively manage and deliver the best care possible. Baylor University Medical Center developed helpful tools and unique training opportunities to increase the comfort level of all responding teams, to allow for nonverbal role identification of team members and to address the specific considerations for the obstetric patient.
