Title: Using Quality Improvement to Increase Breastfeeding Rates Across the United States

Longhorn Hall D (Gaylord Grapevine)
Jennifer Ustianov, MS, BSN, RN, IBCLC , NICHQ, Boston, MA

Discipline: Obstetric (OB), Neonatal (N), Women’s Health (WH)

Learning Objectives:
  • Outline one quality improvement method, tool or strategy that can be used to improve maternity practices that support exclusive breastfeeding.
  • Identify two critical steps to sustaining improvement in breastfeeding outcomes; define the role of one uncommon partner essential for change in practice and the culture of breastfeeding
  • Outline one opportunity for local application

  • Submission Description:
Participants will learn how quality improvement methodology was used to increase exclusive breastfeeding rates, improve maternity care practices that support a mothers’ choice to breastfeed and change the culture of breastfeeding. While participating in the Best Fed Beginnings initiative, nurses championed change in evidence-based practices and achieved buy-in using Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles. Monthly data monitoring was effecting in reducing unwanted practice variation and ensuring optimal breastfeeding outcomes. Local innovation and customization will be highlighted.
