Shoulder Dystocia Drills: A Strategy to Review and Measure Retention of Key Concepts

Sunday, June 12, 2016

Title: Shoulder Dystocia Drills: A Strategy to Review and Measure Retention of Key Concepts

Longhorn Hall D (Gaylord Grapevine)
Jean Salera-Vieira, MS, PNS, APRN-CNS, RNC-OB, C-EFM , Education Department, Kent Hospital, Warwick, RI

Discipline: Obstetric (OB), Professional Issues (PI)

Learning Objectives:
  • State the benefits of simulation as an educational strategy for shoulder dystocia training.
  • Demonstrate knowledge retention of key principles needed during a shoulder dystocia.
  • Prioritize key principles requiring on-going educational review to improve recall in the event of a shoulder dystocia.

  • Submission Description:
Shoulder dystocia is a high-risk emergency in the obstetric setting where the team must come together to provide a coordinated response to minimize the risk of neonatal injury. Using simulation, multidisciplinary shoulder dystocia drills were held in situ in a Level II hospital, with follow-up review drills held 19 months later. Staff knowledge retention from the first to the second drills was assessed to determine which key concepts need ongoing review to maintain knowledge retention.
