Development of New, Innovative Nursing Role of “Room Manager” to Improve Safety and Efficiency of Low-Volume, High-Risk Events As a Part of New Obstetric Massive Transfusion Procedure

Title: Development of New, Innovative Nursing Role of “Room Manager” to Improve Safety and Efficiency of Low-Volume, High-Risk Events As a Part of New Obstetric Massive Transfusion Procedure

Longhorn Hall D (Gaylord Grapevine)
Patricia Hensley, MHA, BSN, RNC-OB , Parent Child Division, South Shore Hospital, South Weymouth, MA

Discipline: Professional Issues (PI)

Learning Objectives:
  • The audience will state two benefits of the Room Manager role in an OB emergency.
  • The audience will state one way in which patient safety is improved by using the Room Manager in simulations of OB emergencies, such as a postpartum hemorrhage requiring the initiation of the massive transfusion protocol.
  • The audience will state one benefit of developing a response to a OB massive transfusion that is initiated by one page-out, and managed by the Room Manager.

  • Submission Description:
The nursing role of “Room Manager” in a new obstetric-specific massive transfusion pathway was successful in reducing time to definitive treatment and improving patient safety in an obstetrical emergency by the assignment of clearly defined and well-rehearsed roles. Simulations allow the obstetrical team to practice and reinforce roles and TeamSTEPPS® communication while maximizing the use of resources and time and decreasing repetitive, wasteful steps.
