H5B - Comparison of Therapeutic Showering with Usual Care during Labor

Wednesday, June 15, 2016 : 8:45 AM

Title: H5B - Comparison of Therapeutic Showering with Usual Care during Labor

Texas C (Gaylord Grapevine)
Mary Ann Stark, PhD, RNC , Bronson School of Nursing, Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI
Marshe Remynse, MSN, FNP-BC , Birthing Unit, Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo, MI

Discipline: Obstetric (OB), Neonatal (N), Professional Issues (PI)

Learning Objectives:
  • Identify at least two benefits of showering for physiologic birth.
  • Describe the method used to answer the research question.
  • Explain at least one strength and one limitation of this study in providing evidence for practice supporting physiologic birth.

  • Submission Description:
The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of therapeutic showering in active labor when compared to usual care. Women who showered for 30 minutes reported less pain, tension and discomfort and more relaxation than women who were in the control group and did not shower. This suggests that showering may be an effective tool in supporting physiologic birth.
