H5A - Supporting Physiological Childbirth: Population Focused Healthcare and the Triple Aim

Wednesday, June 15, 2016 : 8:15 AM

Title: H5A - Supporting Physiological Childbirth: Population Focused Healthcare and the Triple Aim

Texas C (Gaylord Grapevine)
Maria MacKeil, MSN, RN, CNML , Women's Services, Yale New Haven Hospital, New Haven, CT

Discipline: Obstetric (OB), Professional Issues (PI), Women’s Health (WH)

Learning Objectives:
  • Define “physiologic childbirth”
  • List the impact(s) of a physiologic childbirth model of care on patient outcomes and the organization.
  • Define the IHI "Triple Aim" and understand how it relates to obstetrics

  • Submission Description:
The physiological birth process looks at childbirth as a normal event, eliminating the many medical interventions embedded in the culture of many obstetrical units. Changing to a midwifery model of care in support of the physiological birth experience lead to decreased cesarean deliveries, increased successful TOLAC rates and increased patient throughput, resulting in a decreased LOS. Thus improving the patient experience, improving the clinical outcomes for our patients while decreasing cost for the organization.
