Sunday, June 12, 2016

Title: Bleeding after Circumcision: A Retrospective Chart Review to Build Evidence-Based Practice in Newborn Care

Longhorn Hall D (Gaylord Grapevine)
Patricia J. Crosby, BSN, RN, MNN , Mother Baby Care, Maine Medical Center, Portland, ME
Julie V. Fortier, BSN, RN , Center for Clinical and Professional Development, Maine Medical Center, Portland, ME

Discipline: Neonatal (N)

Learning Objectives:
  • 1. The learner will be able to identify evidence from the scientific literature that informs nursing practice regarding post-circumcision bleeding requiring nursing interventions
  • 2. The learner will be able to describe the chart review and data collection process to identify post-circumcision bleeding requiring nursing intervention.
  • 3. The learner will be able to describe and discuss the study’s findings and nursing implications

  • Submission Description:
In the hospital setting, nurses routinely monitor male newborns for post-circumcision bleeding. The literature failed to produce evidence recommending how much time nurses should observe newborns after circumcision and prior to discharge. This IRB approved study examined the frequency, timing and severity of post-circumcision bleeding in 673 newborns. Few cases of bleeding were observed; and the majority of bleeding was minor, requiring minimal intervention. The findings are used to build evidence-based newborn care.
