Title: Each One Teach One: SIDS Prevention

Longhorn Hall D (Gaylord Grapevine)
Freda Horowitz Centor, MSN, RN , Women and Infants Services, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Birmingham, AL

Discipline: Obstetric (OB), Neonatal (N)

Learning Objectives:
  • List 3 risk factors for SIDS
  • List 2 important things to teach new parents to help prevent SIDS
  • Describe one medical center's program to address SIDS prevention

  • Submission Description:
In 1992, the AAP released a recommendation that infants be placed on their backs to sleep in order to reduce the incidence of SIDS, and the SIDS rate dropped by 50%. Despite this great success, a disproportionate number of African American infants continue to die. This presentation will look at one Medical Center's multi-pronged program, both in-hospital and in partnership with other community agencies, to address the SIDS deaths in our community.
