A1 - Intermittent Auscultation & Electronic Fetal Monitoring: Legal and Scientific Issues

Title: A1 - Intermittent Auscultation & Electronic Fetal Monitoring: Legal and Scientific Issues

Disciplines: Obstetric (OB), Professional Issues (PI)

Learning Objectives:
  • Discuss the trend towards IA for low-risk women during labor.
  • Identify the scientific data pertinent to an objective review of IA versus EFM.
  • List the elements of informed consent specific to choosing a monitoring modality or modalities during labor, and discuss the nursing implications related to informed consent.

  • Submission Description:
As clinicians move towards intermittent auscultation (IA) for low risk patients, they need to be able to understand the science behind both monitoring modalities. Legal implications related to informed consent and current state of the science will be the focus of this presentation, with an emphasis on truly informed decision-making for women, their families, and the clinicians that provide their care.
