Title: PC3 - Strategies That Decrease Length of Stay (LOS) for Neonates Experiencing Neonatal Opiate Withdrawal (NOW)

Learning Objectives:
  • Describe the complexity of opiate use, abuse and overdose.
  • Discuss the neurobiology of newborn symptoms of withdrawal and pharmacotherapies available
  • Discuss care practices that reduce length of stay for newborns experiencing Neonatal Opiate Withdrawal (NOW)

  • Submission Description:
    In the past decade, there has been a fourfold increase in drug dependent newborns prenatally exposed to opiates. Discover fetal neural chemistry changes that result in specific neonatal abstinence symptoms. Explore methods of integrating reliable assessments, collaborative nursing and pharmacologic interventions, as well as parent partnering that will decrease LOS. Clarify most often-misinterpreted items on the Finnegan NAS. Leave energized to share new resources, assessments, and care environment changes that will reduce LOS
