Title: G6 - Blood Clots: Can Save Lives through Hemostasis or Destroy Lives through Thrombosis

Disciplines: Childbearing (CB), Advanced Practice (AP)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Discuss the incidence of and risk factors for pulmonary embolism (PE) in the OB population.
  2. State the clinical manifestations of PE in the OB patient.
  3. Describe the preventive strategies, in addition to nursing and medical management of PE in the OB patient.
Submission Description:
The hypercoagulable state of pregnancy serves to protect the OB patient from hemorrhage after delivery; however it is also a significant risk factor for developing the potentially deadly complication of pulmonary embolism. While the occurance of pulmonary embolism is rare in the OB population, it is associated with a high morbidity and mortality rate. Prompt recognition and interventions by nursing staff are essential for improving patient outcomes. It is imperative that OB nurses are familiar with the risk factors, clinical manifestations, and management of pulmonary embolism in the OB population. Additionally, perinatal nurses need to be aware of effective strategies, based on a risk assessment approach, used to prevent venous thromboembolism. Case studies will be used to highlight conventional and the latest cutting edge treatment for this devastating complication.
