Title: H3 - Strange Bedfellows: An Analysis of Mother/Baby Hospital Separations in a Large Tertiary-Care Mother/Baby Hospital

Disciplines: Newborn (NB), Childbearing (CB)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Recognize the physiologic and psychological effect of mother/infant proximity after delivery.
  2. Identify maternal/infant separations occuring at delivery and during postpartum.
  3. Describe opportunities for mother/infant proximity during birth hospitalization.
Submission Description:
Separation of mother and infant during hospital delivery stay is common to Western culture. Patient volume and established hospital systems may enable these inadvertent, functional separations. This session will include a discussion of the most common separations of mother and baby and the actions to decrease such separations. The goal is to promote family centered care, increase breastfeeding, and improve client satisfaction.
