Title: F3 - In Situ Simulation and TeamSTEPPS: Transforming the Care Delivery Culture to Support Implementing Evidence-Based Practice to Achieve 'zero Birth Injury'

Disciplines: Professional Issues (PI), Childbearing (CB)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Define four key individual behaviors and communication skills and specify when to utilize them during a high risk event to achieve high reliability.
  2. Describe how in situ simulation and TeamSTEPPS multidisciplinary training can be implemented to normalize standardized team skills.
  3. Describe key change management principles to successfully support the employment of a 'Zero Birth Injury' initiative in a large multi-hospital care system.
Submission Description:
An initiative to reduce preventable birth injuries to zero was implemented at six perinatal units using two comprehensive approaches: 1) culture change through in situ simulation experiential learning with TeamSTEPPS training, and 2) system-wide collaboration to support implementation of evidence based practice 'bundles'. This presentation will describe the interdisciplinary communication and teamwork skills that individuals must utilize to achieve high reliability and to successfully employ a system-wide change in practice.
