Title: C3 - Solutions for Survival: Working Where Birth Is Not Considered Normal
Disciplines: Professional Issues (PI), Childbearing (CB)
Learning Objectives:
- Compare beliefs systems regarding birth.
- Differentiate between medicalized childbirth practices and normal birth.
- Discuss strategies and solutions when belief systems clash.
An intrapartum (IP) nurse’s beliefs regarding birth drives practice, providing strength and direction. Amongst members of the healthcare team there are many variations of beliefs regarding birth. When these belief systems clash and plans for patient care differ, conflict arises. This session will assist the IP nurse who believes birth is a normal event (not requiring medical intervention) to develop strategies to resolve conflict and co-exist in a unit with varying belief systems.
