Title: C2 - Donor Milk Banking: Using Someone Else's Milk
Disciplines: Professional Issues (PI), Newborn Care (N), Childbearing (CB)
Learning Objectives:
- Discuss the latest evidence about the benefits of human milk to the fragile neonate.
- Explore solutions to logistical issues such as inclusion criteria for donors, purchasing from large milk banks, or setting up local milk “mini banks” for pick up and delivery to a larger designated milk bank.
- Identify educational strategies to address common barriers to acceptance of donor human milk.
There is overwhelming evidence of the health benefits of human milk for babies, especially fragile preterm infants. Donor human milk banks may bridge the gap in the amount of human milk available to infants when their mothers are unable to provide enough. Yet there remains parental and provider resistance to the concept of “using someone else’s milk”. This presentation will provide an overview of the current science supporting the benefits of human milk for the fragile neonate and other babies, and current safety standards and guidelines for establishment and operation of a milk bank. Logistical issues and barriers to providing donor human milk will also be addressed.
