Title: A6 - A Tale of Two Labors: What a Difference a Nurse Can Make
Disciplines: Newborn (NB), Childbearing (CB)
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the physiologic process of birth including the hormonal orchestration of labor and birth and the role of pain.
- Discuss both the evidence based maternity care practices that facilitate and the evidence based maternity care practices that interfere with the physiologic process of birth.
- Explore the ways in which nurses can provide evidence-based nursing care that facilitates physiologic birth.
What happened to normal labor and birth? How can nursing care influence birth outcomes? The labors and births of two healthy young nulliparas will be presented to demonstrate how these women with similar healthy pregnancies had very different labors and births. The experiences of these two women will be analyzed using the six Lamaze International healthy birth practices. Existing evidence for these care practices that improve birth outcomes will be presented.
