B2 - Preventing a Broken Heart: Essentials of An Integrated Approach to Caring for Pregnant Women with Cardiac Disease

Learning Objectives:
- Review the physiologic effects of pregnancy, labor, and birth and how they impact pregnant women with underlying cardiac disease.
- Review common cardiac diagnoses.
- Describe special considerations related to caring for women with cardiac disease.
Since the 1970’s, the majority of babies born with congenital cardiac disease are surviving into adulthood and entering reproductive age. These patients have begun seeking care in our obstetrics departments presenting the need for a new direction to prenatal care for this population. This presentation outlines special considerations for caring for childbearing women with cardiac disease in the perinatal setting.
