H4 - Drink or Drown: The Case for Evidence-Based Bottle Feeding
Disciplines: Newborn Care (NB)
Learning Objectives:

  - Explain the anatomy and physiology of the infant suck-swallow-breathe (SSB) mechanism.
 - Describe the role of feeding flow rate as it pertains to the SSB mechanism.
 - Identify feeding-bottle-nipple flow rates and describe bottle-feeding technique more likely to result in airway safety and optimal infant oral behaviors.

Because feeding competes with breathing, feeding is an airway issue. It takes several weeks for a term newborn to learn to coordinate breathing with sucking and swallowing, yet how many nurses understand that typical bottle-feeding practices often compromise the newborn airway? After a brief review of the anatomy and physiology of the infant suck-swallow-breathe mechanism, this presentation will compare “conventional wisdom” versus an evidence-based approach to bottle-feeding the newborn and young infant.
