H3 - Sleep: The "6th" Vital Sign?

Learning Objectives:
  1. Incorporate assessment of sleep quality as the "6th" Vital Sign using 3 simple questions.
  2. Identify the characteristics and consequences of sleep disorders that impact women: insomnia, sleep worker's syndrome, excessive daytime sleepiness, restless legs syndrome and obstructive sleep apnea.
  3. Identify treatment modalities for common sleep disoders that affect women, including side effects and benefits.
Submission Description:
The most common sleep disorders that affect women across the lifespan include: insomnia, restless legs syndrome, obstructive sleep apnea and shift worker’s syndrome. Lack of sleep is associated with longer labors and more operative births, as well as hypertension, diabetes mellitus and heart attacks. Excessive daytime sleepiness results in impaired judgment, motor vehicle accidents, medication errors, irritability, anxiety and depression. Screening for disorders can be accomplished with 3 simple questions. Treatment may be simple or complex.
