F4 - Challenges In Maternal – Fetal Assessment During Labor: Case Studies In Differentiating Maternal Heart Rate and Fetal Heart Rate

Title: F4 - Challenges In Maternal – Fetal Assessment During Labor: Case Studies In Differentiating Maternal Heart Rate and Fetal Heart Rate

Disciplines: Childbearing (CB), Professional Issues (PI)

Learning Objectives:
  1. List signs that the heart rate tracing may be of maternal rather than fetal origin
  2. Review recommendations to decrease risk of confusing maternal and fetal heart rates during labor
  3. Participate in case study discussions
Submission Description:
During labor, it is critically important to distinguish between maternal and fetal heart rates if continuous fetal monitoring is being used, as confusion between the two can lead to lack of appropriate interventions and/or unnecessary interventions that can potentially compromise patient safety. A series of case studies including review of fetal monitoring tracings will be used to discuss these issues and make recommendations for clinical practice.
