Title: PC8 - Obstetrical Emergencies: They Happen Outside of L&D, Too!
Disciplines: Childbearing (CB), Newborn Care (N), Professional Issues (PI)
Learning Objectives:
- Outline a plan of care for the pregnant woman delivering in the Emergency Department or Intensive Care Unit.
- Describe common maneuvers to treat shoulder dystocia and how to best communicate them to staff outside the labor and birth suite.
- Identify cognitive, behavioral, and leadership performance skills for multidisciplinary teams caring for a pregnant patient with an eclamptic seizure, a cardiac arrest or anaphylactoid syndrome of pregnancy.
Obstetrical emergencies somehow seem more urgent when they occur anyplace other than the labor and delivery suite. This presentation focuses on crisis situations that may occur in L&D, the ED, or the ICU. They are delivery of a newborn (breech or cephalic), shoulder dystocia, eclamptic seizure, cord prolapse and maternal resuscitation. Performances by multi disciplinary team members affect the outcome of the pregnancy and handoffs, transfers, and transports are areas where serious errors can be made. Often, educational opportunities for improvement are missed when the concern becomes HIPPA or EMTALA violation. Can patient-focused care be the center of conversation?
