Learning Objectives:
  • 1. Discuss the benefits of Delayed Cord Clamping in the preterm infant.
  • 2. Develop a policy specific to Delayed Cord Clamping.
  • 3.Identify steps necessary for a multidisciplinary approach to successfully implement delayed cord clamping in the preterm infant.

  • Submission Description:
The staff at Baylor University Medical Center identified an opportunity to promote the health and safety of our very low birth weight infants (VLBW). In August 2013, the Women's and Children's Department implemented Delayed Cord Clamping (DCC) for the VLBW infants based on the 2012 ACOG Committee opinion and World Health Organizations (WHO) recommendations. A multidisciplinary team was created and through utilization of our hospital's simulation lab and standardized education, implementation of DCC was successful.

The Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
