Longhorn Hall D (Gaylord Grapevine)
Katharine E. Donaldson, MSN, APN, C, WHNP-BC, CPLC, C-EFM , Maternity Services & Perinatal Palliative Care, Capital Health Medical Center Hopewell, Pennington, NJ

Discipline: Obstetric (OB)

Learning Objectives:
  • I. Describe the motivation for the legislation.
  • II. Discuss five of the nursing and physician mandates of the Autumn Joy Stillbirth Research and Dignity Act.
  • III. Discuss the pros and cons of perinatal loss legislation.

  • Submission Description:
New Jersey passed a bill titled “Autumn Joy Stillbirth Research & Dignity Act” in 2014. This first legislation of its kind mandates various aspects of bereavement care for losses at 20 weeks or more (and for "unintended deaths" weighing 350 grams or more) such as a one-to-one nursing care, education of providers and nurses, and specifics regarding treating “grieving families” with sensitivity. The presenter will outline each requirement of the legislation and facilitate discussion regarding the pros and cons of legislation.
