Sunday, June 12, 2016

Title: Outcomes of a Quality Improvement Project: Implementation of Inpatient Infant Safe Sleep Practices

Longhorn Hall D (Gaylord Grapevine)
Roger D. Rholdon Jr., DNP, APRN, CPNP-AC , College of Nursing and Allied Health Professionals, University of Louisiana Lafayette, Lafayette, LA
Lisa Dailey, DNP, NNP-BC, CPNP- AC , College of Nursing, University of South Alabama, Mobile, AL

Discipline: Neonatal (N), Professional Issues (PI)

Learning Objectives:
  • Learner will demonstrate opportunities for inpatient nursing staff to model appropriate behaviors for infant safe sleep.
  • Learner will be able to describe the effect of a formal Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) education program for staff nurses on knowledge and behaviors of SIDS prevention practices.
  • Learner will be able to describe the importance of implementing safe sleep environments in the hospital setting.

  • Submission Description:
The rates of sudden infant death (SIDS) have reached a plateau leading to new recommendations for safe sleep practices in the newborn population. A focused quality improvement project, which includes formal education for inpatient pediatric nurses, will enhance the adherence to new safe sleep guidelines. This project demonstrates clinical improvements in nursing behaviors after educational training in proper safe sleeping environments.
