Title: Let’s Give Them Something to Talk About: Collaborative Conversations for Improved Outcomes

Longhorn Hall D (Gaylord Grapevine)
Laura Money, MSN, RN , UAB Hospital, Birmingham, AL
Milea Eyer, MSN, RNC-OB , UAB Hospital, Birmingham, AL

Discipline: Obstetric (OB), Neonatal (N), Professional Issues (PI)

Learning Objectives:
  • Review Contributing factors to medical errors in the OB setting
  • Recognize the prevalence and cause of litigations in the OB setting
  • Discuss options for collaborative communication plans to minimize adverse events in the OB setting

  • Submission Description:
It is an established fact that communication is instrumental to patient outcomes. We implemented a formal collaborative communication plan in labor and delivery that includes input from all members of the healthcare team (Obstetricians, Neonatologist, Anesthesiologist, L&D RNs, OR RNs, NICU RNs, Surgical technicians, etc). This real time process ensures all providers participate collaboratively in the care planning of all labor and delivery patients, promoting optimal labor progression, pain management, and safer deliveries.
