Title: Leading Organizational Change By Addressing the Need to Improve Accurate Blood Pressure Assessment of the Obese Perinatal Patient

Longhorn Hall D (Gaylord Grapevine)
Susan P. Fulara, MSN, RNC-OB, NE-BC , Women and Infant Services, Alexian Brothers Medical Center, Elk Grove Village, IL

Discipline: Obstetric (OB), Women’s Health (WH)

Learning Objectives:
  • Discuss obesity trends in the adult population.
  • Describe how obesity impacts the ability to obtain an accurate blood pressure.
  • List the actions taken to roll-out a practice change.

  • Submission Description:
They say timing is everything. Two new perinatal initiatives brought attention to inconsistent and incorrect practices in obtaining blood pressure readings, especially for obese patients. After a successful trial in introducing a radial cuff, in conjunction with education, this practice was disseminated throughout the organization.
