G4 - Implementing the 4 Ps (Patience and Positioning for Physiologic Progress) for Safe Second Stage Labor Care

Title: G4 - Implementing the 4 Ps (Patience and Positioning for Physiologic Progress) for Safe Second Stage Labor Care

Disciplines: Obstetric (OB)

Learning Objectives:
  • Recognize the impact of second stage management on maternal and newborn outcomes.
  • Differentiate the current evidence-based second stage labor practices from traditional care.
  • Identify safe management practices from the key “P” principles

  • Submission Description:
Unnecessary interventions and traditional practices during the Second Stage of Labor may increase the risk of immediate and long-term harm to the mother and baby, disrupt maternal fetal hormonal physiology, increase the Cesarean delivery rate, and negatively impact the mother’s birth experience with potential effects on her health and her relationship with her infant. This session will summarize current evidence utilizing the 4 P framework: ' Patience and Positioning for Physiologic Progress' implemented in a large national hospital system.
