Title: G5 - Non-invasive Respiratory Management in the Delivery Room and Beyond
Disciplines: Neonatal (N)
Learning Objectives:
Submission Description:
Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) remains the most common admission diagnosis in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Health care providers have a clear appreciation for the potential harm to pulmonary structures that have been associated with mechanical ventilation (MV) in the preterm infant including bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). In an effort to reduce the incidence of BPD and negative neurodevelopmental outcomes associated with MV, non-invasive ventilatory management has become the standard of care. This presentation will review basic pulmonary physiology, the different types of non-invasive strategies and illustrate appropriate use of these respiratory modalities through a case study approach. Nursing care strategies to support successful application and tolerance is reviewed. Scientific evidence supporting use will also be highlighted.
